Description

Sam Brown returned to the firm in May of 2018 after clerking for the Honorable George Wu in the Central District of California. Sam began his legal career at Hennig Ruiz & Singh in the fall of 2015 shortly upon graduating from the University of Southern California-Gould School of Law. During school Sam worked as a law clerk for Hadsell, Stormer & Renick LLP, where he helped represent employees in whistleblower, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination cases. He also worked extensively on Civil Rights cases, representing victims of police brutality. In addition, to his experience in Plaintiff-side employment litigation, Sam also volunteered as a legal intern for Unite HERE Local 11, helping members of Los Angeles’ hotel workers union in administrative proceedings and organizing campaigns.

Sam’s interest and commitment to worker rights has roots in his family’s ties to the Labor movement, and his own experience driving a truck as an owner operator before Law School. He believes that dignity in the workplace is a right of all workers, not a convenience or privilege reserved for employees of a certain class, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

At Hennig Ruiz & Singh Sam represents individual plaintiffs in discrimination, whistleblower retaliation, and harassment cases. He also plays a central role in the Firm’s federal practice, representing clients in cases brought under § 1983 against state and local law enforcement, actions brought under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act stemming from race based discrimination in schools, and cases brought under the False Claims Act.

Sam’s work at the firm builds off a stellar academic performance at USC, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif, and received high honors grades in Labor, Employment, Civil Rights, First Amendment, and Administrative Law courses. In 2014, he was named a USC Law and Mental Health Scholar in recognition of his scholarship focused on the intersection between law and stigma surrounding mental illness that culminated in the publication of his Note MAD TO ASK: STIGMA CREATION AND THE QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER OF STATE BAR MENTAL HEALTH INQUIRIES. His commitment to social and economic justice was recognized at Graduation, when he received the prestigious Dorothy Wright Nelson Justice Award. He also helped revive USC Law’s dormant chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. He earned his B.A. in English from UCLA in 2007.
