Description

Laurel joined RHRC as an associate attorney in 2011, bringing with her extensive knowledge of litigation procedure and consumer protection matters. A Stanford and Santa Clara Law graduate, Laurel spent several years prior to law school working at a prominent plaintiff’s class action firm, focusing on nationwide class actions in the areas of toxic tort, Ponzi-schemes, predatory lending, litigation under the False Claims Act, wage and hour actions, Consumer Legal Remedies Act cases, and large-scale business and financial fraud cases. Laurel’s significant litigation experience provides her with a keen sense of strategy and aggressive focus in pushing cases to resolution.

During law school, Laurel clerked for the Honorable William Monahan, Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, and excelled in honors moot court competitions, winning several awards for her excellence as an oral advocate.

While at Stanford, Laurel was a nationally ranked water polo player and team captain and made four consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament, two in the championship game. Recognized by the University for her excellence in class leadership and achievements while at Stanford, Laurel was inducted into the Cardinal Class Core at the completion of her Stanford tenure and was named a 2006 Stanford Scholar Athlete upon graduation as well.

Laurel’s practice focuses exclusively on litigation of business torts and real estate disputes. Her experience at RHRC includes representing commercial developers, residential and commercial landowners, businesses, buyers and sellers, brokers and agents, and parties to complex lease transactions. Laurel has successfully litigated cases from the pre-lawsuit stage through jury trials and appeals. Laurel regularly speaks in-house at real estate brokerage firms on current legal issues.

NOTABLE LITIGATION

Red Bridge Partners, LLC v. Trustees of Lee Family TrustWon specific performance action over the $4.5 million purchase of a mixed-use commercial building in San Francisco after sellers breached sales contract. Succeeded in obtaining order requiring sellers to pay all of our client’s attorneys’ fees incurred in the action.

Lucky Lease v. AlbertsonsAction by our client, the purchaser of valuable sandwich leases from Albertsons, for fraud, misrepresentation, and breach of contract based on false information provided to our client during the purchase transaction regarding a percentage rent lease term that operated to fundamentally alter the profitability of the transaction by approximately $1 million. We settled the action on favorable terms prior to trial.

Jackson et al. v. Pimentel, et al.Defended owners of a $10 million property in Monte Sereno from right of way, easement, and encroachment claims made by an adjoining landowner. Pushed the matter to trial and secured a favorable settlement the day trial was set to commence.

Client v. Pacific Gas & Electric (In re PG&E San Bruno Fire Cases Coordinated Proceeding)Represented a family affected by the September 2010 San Bruno PG&E gas line explosion that killed eight people and injured dozens more. Achieved a favorable settlement for our clients’ claims for nuisance, diminution in property value/inverse condemnation, trespass, and negligent infliction of emotional distress in conjunction with settlement efforts by Plaintiffs’ liaison counsel.

Campbell et al. v. Ardwood, et al.Represented members of the Patterson family who owned approximately 400 acres of property in Fremont, California, from third party claim of an alleged purchase option agreement that operated as a cloud on title and threatened to impede the intended sale of the property. Achieved a favorable settlement in time for clear title to issue to the eventual purchaser.

Romero v. Pastorino, et al.Action for quiet title to a prescriptive easement, nuisance, and trespass claims brought by our client against a neighboring landowner in Half Moon Bay. After a two-week jury trial, we won a unianimous verdict for our client on all claims.
