DescriptionKaiya Lyons joined Bernabei & Kabat in August 2018 as the Civil Rights Litigation Fellow. Ms. Lyons previously served as the Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Andrew R. Pearson of the Seventh Judicial District of Minnesota in Stearns County and as the Law Fellow to the American Constitution Society in Washington, D.C. Ms. Lyons graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2016, where she served as the President of the Minnesota Justice Foundation, Lead Managing Editor of Law and Inequality: A Journal of Theory and Practice, and was a member of the mock trial competition team. In her last year of law school, Ms. Lyons worked with Professor JaneAnne Murray, a member of the steering committee of Clemency Project 2014, to draft petitions on behalf of eligible applicants for the Obama administration’s clemency program for nonviolent federal inmates. During law school, Ms. Lyons served as a Law Clerk in the Civil Rights Enforcement Clinic located in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. In this capacity, she assisted in the investigation and litigation of cases arising under the Civil Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act under the direction of Assistant U.S. Attorneys. She also interned with the Institute for Justice Minnesota, ACLU of Minnesota, the National Partnership for Women and Families, and the United States Department of Justice Office of Privacy and Civil Liberties.Ms. Lyons graduated from The George Washington University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. While at GWU, she served as the Secretary of the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, International, and attended the Undergraduate Affiliate Programme at University College London. She has been published in the Thurgood Marshall School of Law Journal of Gender, Race, and Justice; Law and Inequality: Sua Sponte; the ACSblog; and on her website on the intersection of law and theatre, Breaching the Fourth Wall. Ms. Lyons is admitted to practice law in Minnesota.
